What Year 3 fractions covers

In Year 3, children add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, staying within one whole — for example 1/6 + 2/6 or 4/5 − 1/5. Because the denominators match, they add or subtract the top numbers and keep the bottom the same. Answers are left exactly as a Year 3 child writes them — not simplified — so the key matches what is taught. Every sheet is A4, print-ready, and comes with an answer key.

What fractions does Year 3 cover?

Year 3 children add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, staying within one whole — for example 1/6 + 2/6 or 4/5 − 1/5. The denominators match the whole numbers children already know (halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths, eighths and tenths).

Are the fractions simplified?

No — and that is deliberate. A Year 3 child is taught to write 2/6, not 1/3, so the answer key keeps the fraction exactly as the child would write it. Simplifying comes later, in Year 5 and Year 6.

Are the answers included?
